Hikes: Madonna Mountain

Distance: 4 miles (made it 2m first go)
Elevation: 1,100ft
Open: Hikers, dogs and bikers (kudos to those that do it)

My co-worker and I felt it was time that we start training for SLO Ultra @ Wild Cherry in September and the first hike was Madonna Mountain.It was very easy to find. I am one to get lost with simple directions and I had no problem finding this hike.  I have never hiked Madonna Mountian. I hiked Bishops when I was younger. That was the last time I hiked a mountain. What age that was, I can’t remember. It was a challenge, but a good challenge. We didn’t make it to the top, but half -way mark.

There is a big incline at the beginning, but if you need a breather there is a bench to sit at 1/2 mile up the slope to catch your breath and take a look into the views of SLO.

We continued to climb up, and it took time with some stopping. Pace yourself if you’re like me and just starting out hiking again. It’s a great hike to do if you’re visiting the area or want a good hiking challenge.

Make sure to wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle. I did one out of the two. I wish I had water with me. The sun beats down on you a lot of the time if you go around 3ish like we did. There is a lot of people hiking up and down the mountain. It’s a safe trail and a lot of the time people will say hello in passing.

While we didn’t make it to the top of the peak, we plan to go back and give it a try again. It’s a great practice mountain.
